The decentralized exchange (DEX) market has undergone a significant transformation in the past seven years, with trading volume growing exponentially from 2019 to 2025. According to a recent report by SwapSpace, the DEX market reached a record $4.7 trillion in 2025, a staggering 9,260 times the volume of 2019. However, in 2026, the activity moderated to $1.63 trillion year-to-date.
Multichain Activity on the Rise
The report highlights the growing trend of multichain activity, where users interact with more than one blockchain network. SwapSpace's internal data shows that over 90% of its users interacted with multiple blockchain networks in 2026. This trend is not limited to SwapSpace, as DeFiLlama data cited in the report reveals that Ethereum's share of global DEX volume decreased from 46.2% in 2021 to 19.3% in 2025, while Solana's share increased to 33.3%.
Fragmentation of Liquidity
The report emphasizes that the multichain picture captures only one layer of fragmentation. Liquidity is also distributed within individual blockchain ecosystems, with over 1,950 protocols on Ethereum, more than 1,200 on BNB Chain, and more than 1,000 each on Arbitrum and Base. This creates a complex environment where users must navigate multiple sources of liquidity within a single chain.
Users Prioritize Best Rate and Multichain Access
The report's latent class analysis reveals that 61.86% of survey respondents valued best rate, compared with 52.51% for multichain access and 39.91% for support for rare tokens. However, the differences become clearer across user segments, with crypto-native power users placing the greatest emphasis on multichain access, best rate, and rare-token support.
Intent-Based Execution: A New Approach
As the market becomes increasingly fragmented, platforms are developing new approaches to simplify the user experience. Intent-based execution is one such approach, where users simply state what they want to achieve, and competing systems find a way to complete the trade. Platforms such as UniswapX, 1inch Fusion, and NEAR Intents already use versions of this model.
What's Next for the Crypto Market?
The DEX market's explosive growth and increasing fragmentation present both opportunities and challenges for the crypto industry. As users become more sophisticated and demanding, platforms must adapt to provide seamless and efficient execution. The rise of intent-based execution and other innovative approaches may help simplify the user experience, but it also raises questions about how platforms will handle the underlying complexity. Ultimately, what matters is whether users can access the networks and liquidity they need without having to navigate the underlying complexity themselves.
